Csévi-szirti Rock Shelter
The Csévi-szirti rock shelter is a cave located in the Pilis Mountains within the Danube–Ipoly National Park, at Csévi-szirtek.
Description
The cave is located at Csévi-szirtek in Pilisszentlélek, on the north side of the Pilis mountain (in a strictly protected area). The Csévi-szirti rock shelter is situated 50° and 100 m from the Csévi-szirti Cave, at almost the same altitude, at the base of a 7 m rock tower, at about 530 m above sea level. In front of the rock shelter there is a loose rockfall deposit consisting of large stones. The arched, flat cave entrance is 1.6 m wide and 0.6 m high. The 2 m long stone niche is horizontal and dry. Its walls have little speleothem encrustation and condensation water calcite. It is filled with humus, rock debris and mouflon excrement. The cave passage is accessible with basic equipment and no permission is required to visit the cave.
In 2005 the cave was first called Csévi-szirti rock shelter in the literature. The cave also appears in the literature as Csévi-szirti rock shelter (Kárpát 1990).
Research history
In 1990 József Kárpát surveyed the Csévi-szirti rock shelter, and based on the survey he prepared a 1:50 scale floor plan map and a cross‑section map of the cave. The location of the cross‑section in the cave is shown on the floor plan map.
In the manuscript written by József Kárpát and produced in 1990 it is mentioned that the Csévi-szirti rock shelter (Pilisszentlélek) is located 50° (50 degrees?) 100 m from the Csévi-szirti Layer (Réteg) Barlang, at almost the same altitude, at the base of a 7 m rock tower, at about 530 m above sea level. In front of the rock shelter there is a loose rockfall deposit consisting of large stones. The arched, flat cave entrance is 1.6 m wide and 0.6 m high. The 2 m long stone niche is horizontal and dry. Its walls have little speleothem encrustation and condensation-water calcite. It is filled with humus, rock debris and mouflon droppings. The insignificant cavity has not previously appeared in descriptions. The description includes the plan map of the Csévi-szirti rock shelter and a cross‑section map.
In the manuscript written by József Kárpát in 1991 it is mentioned that the Csévi-szirti rock shelter (Piliscsév) is 2 m long and has no depth. In 2002 a member of the Ariadne Karst and Cave Research Association, Richárd Kovács, surveyed the Csévi-szirti rock shelter (4840‑84) on behalf of the Barlangtani Institute, and then based on the survey prepared the cave plan map, longitudinal section map and cross‑section map. The plan map shows the location of the cross‑section within the cave. According to the survey the cave is 2.2 m long and 0.8 m high. In the 2005 report of the Ariadne Karst and Cave Research Association it can be read that the Csévi-szirti rock shelter with cadastral number 4840‑84 is 2.2 m long, 0.8 m vertical extent, 0 m deep, 0.8 m high and 2.5 m horizontal extent. The association’s 2008 report states that the Csévi-szirti rock shelter with cadastral number 4840‑84 is 2.2 m long, 0.8 m vertical extent, 0 m deep, 0.8 m high and 2.5 m horizontal extent.
