The Dobó István Castle Museum occupies the historic castle of Eger and takes its name from István Dobó, the captain who commanded the fortress's successful defense against a much larger Ottoman army during the siege of 1552, an episode that became one of the most celebrated events in Hungarian military history and later the subject of Géza Gárdonyi's classic novel "Eclipse of the Crescent Moon." The castle itself is officially recognized in Hungary as a site of outstanding national memorial significance. Within its walls the museum presents collections of historical and archaeological artifacts, fine and applied art, ethnographic material, and literary heritage connected to Heves county, with a particular focus on the 1552 siege and the broader history of the fortress. The institution also administers the nearby Gárdonyi Géza Memorial House, honoring the author whose novel brought the siege to a wide readership, and runs museum-education programs for school groups exploring the castle's layered medieval and early-modern history.
