The Hıdırlık Redoubt is a fortification on the outskirts of Edirne, part of the ring of defenses the Ottoman state began building around the city starting in 1829 under the supervision of Hoca İshak Efendi, chief translator to the Ottoman Imperial Council, in response to the threat of Russian advances into Ottoman territory. Known as the largest redoubt in Edirne's defense system, it has a perimeter of roughly 1,800 meters and originally included a formal entrance gate, barracks for its garrison, rooms for artillery crews, gun emplacements, and a network of trenches surrounding a central courtyard. The fortress remained in active military use decades after its construction, serving during the First Balkan War of 1912-1913, one of the conflicts in which Edirne's ring of forts came under siege. Today it survives as one of the more substantial remnants of Edirne's nineteenth-century military architecture, reflecting the city's long-standing strategic role guarding the empire's northwestern approaches.
