The Jókai Memorial Room occupies a small building known as the Présház, a former wine-press house, inside the Jókai Garden on Svábhegy in Budapest's twelfth district. The site is linked to the celebrated nineteenth-century Hungarian novelist Mór Jókai, who kept a villa in this hillside garden; after the original villa was lost, the Présház was adapted to commemorate him, incorporating terracotta building material salvaged from his former residence. Since 1977 the Petőfi Literary Museum has run the memorial room, displaying personal belongings, furniture, and mementos connected to the writer's life and literary career. Set within the leafy surroundings of the Jókai Garden, reachable by the Children's Railway or local buses toward the Városkút stop, the memorial functions as one of several small writer's-house museums the Petőfi Literary Museum maintains around Budapest, offering an intimate, garden-set counterpoint to the capital's larger literary institutions.
