Address
4400 Nyíregyháza, Benczúr tér 21.
The museum building was constructed in 1925 in a neoclassical style based on the plans of Kálmán Maróthy.
History
The Szabolcs County Archaeological Society and its collection was founded on December 1, 1868 in Nagykálló. Their first archaeological exhibition was held in 1899 in Nyíregyháza, at the county house, founded by archaeologist Jósa András, former chief physician of Szabolcs County, who became the namesake of the present museum in 1918. Between 1925 and 1948, Lajos Kiss, a Kossuth Prize‑winning folklorist, was the museum director and created the folklore collection. Lajos Kiss established the folklore research of the Nyírség region. Thanks to him, the former guild material of Nyíregyháza is visible.
From the 1950s onward, the local history, historical document, fine and applied arts, numismatic, and literary history collections grew.
Sóstó Museum Village
The Sóstó Museum Village, opened in 1979 near the Sóstó Spa, is an open‑air ethnographic museum covering about 10 hectares. Its task is the preservation of the traditional folk monuments, houses, economic and public buildings, and tools of rural life of the county’s ethnographic regions – Nyírség, Szatmár, the Beregi‑Tiszahát, the Rétköz, the Mezőség – as well as their scientific and educational processing and presentation for tourism.
Kállay Collection
The museum’s third unit is the Kállay Collection, operating here since November 2007, which, according to the will of its founder Dr. Kristóf Kállay, a chaplain of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, collects and exhibits the heritage of Hungary’s high and middle nobility.
