Lade

The small island Lade (Ancient Greek Λάδη Ladē (f. sg.), Turkish Batiköy) lay in antiquity near the coast of Asia Minor west of Miletus at a distance of 5 km. Here was also the tomb of a mythical king of Miletus, Asterios, son of Anax, which is why it was also called Asterios. Here the Battle of Lade took place in 494 BC. In 412 BC the Athenians camped here in the lead‑up to the Battle of Miletus.

Due to deposits of the Meander River the island today lies in the fertile Meander plain and is therefore Turkish mainland. It rises, still clearly recognizable today, out of the alluvial ground.
