Outer lake (Tihany)
The Outer Lake is a silted depression located on the Tihany Peninsula, situated 116 metres above sea level, which formed from the main crater of the former volcano that built the peninsula. The lake is part of the strictly protected, non‑visitable area of the Tihany Peninsula, which directly belongs to the Balaton Uplands National Park. However, it can be observed excellently from the surrounding heights. Its geomorphological position is interesting and it has a rich fauna.
Highly protected area
The Outer Lake itself, from its former drained state, has again become an undisturbed aquatic and marsh habitat through several decades of habitat reconstruction. In addition to the protected and highly protected coastal birds and reed singers, it is a nesting site for the huntable summer crane.
