Pécs Gallery
The term Pécsi Galéria (PGGM - Pécsi Galéria és Grafikai Műhely) refers to the first exhibition space in the county seat of Baranya presenting contemporary art, which has been operating since 1977. Today the institution encompasses several galleries: Pécsi Galéria, Pincegaléria and Pécsi Kisgaléria. The three exhibition venues are separated in their concepts according to institutional conditions and possibilities. The institution in Hungary maintains close relations with galleries and museums of other cities (Miskolc, Szombathely, Kaposvár, Győr, Székesfehérvár etc.).
Large Gallery
The Cultural Department of the Pécs City Council created the city's first exhibition space for contemporary art in 1977 in the Színház tér newspaper reader. In 1979 the exhibition hall at Széchenyi tér was handed over, so exhibitions were held at two locations until December 31, 1981. With the opening of the Pécsi Kisgaléria in 1984, the institution expanded with a new venue and appropriate office space and warehouses. From 1991 it operated partially, and finally from 1997 as an independent institution.
Pécsi Galéria és Grafikai Műhely organizes and stages exhibitions in many countries of the country and Europe. Its thematic exhibitions (Nő/Woman, Rajz/Drawing, Vonal/Line, A természet/The nature etc.), the graphic exhibitions it presents (Plakátok/Posters), architectural and design exhibitions have provided national and international reputation. Participants in the Gallery's program are distinguished representatives of Contemporary Art, and the international exhibitions have always resulted in significant and long‑lasting cultural connections. The gallery holds 20–22 exhibitions per year. The Pécsi Kisgaléria also belongs to the gallery.
The institution primarily hosts contemporary visual, industrial, photographic and architectural art exhibitions. Individual and group exhibitions of Pécs artists and individual and group exhibitions of the best of the domestic art scene are presented. In addition, thematic, domestic and international exhibitions, presentations of contemporary domestic and international artistic currents and trends, exhibitions showing applied art, technologies and design changes, new multimedia techniques, performances, videos, experimental films also find a place. The Gallery, in the exhibition hall of Széchenyi Square, provides every year an opportunity for graduates of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Pécs and those completing their final exams in the DLA program to present their knowledge to the city and the region under worthy conditions.
Pécs Small Gallery
The Small Gallery rather provides an opportunity for those Pécs artists who have work of appropriate artistic quality, but whose creations’ nature, size, perspective can be fully realized within a chamber-like exhibition inside the Small Gallery. Among the Pécs creators many are less prolific, but require to account for their knowledge every 5–6 years. At the same venue, Hungarian and foreign artists who present a specific individual concept, a new style or technique and whose exhibition’s scope would not be displayable in a larger venue are given the opportunity. In the Small Gallery it is customary to hold visual arts fairs and sales actions related to the Christmas holidays.
Cellar Gallery
In the Cellar Gallery of the Large Gallery, with the conditions arranged, there is the possibility for exhibitions that, during an artistic experiment or a technical trial, account for the creator’s ideas.
