Szerecsen Pharmacy Museum
The Szerecsen Pharmacy (as many know it, the Sipőcz Pharmacy) is the first pharmacy in Pécs, which today operates as a pharmacy museum.
History
Pécs's first pharmacy was founded in 1697 by Seitz Nepomuk János, a pharmacist from Zágráb, under the name "Szerecsen". After several changes of ownership, the pharmacy near today's Jókai Square, together with the house and the herb garden, was bought by pharmacist István Sipőcz, who moved it to its present location in 1864.
In 1897 (on the occasion of its 200th anniversary) it was renovated according to the plans of architect Imre Schlauch with neo‑Rococo furniture (Hoffmann's "First Pécs Furniture, Door and Window Factory"), Zsolnay ceramic decoration and display vessels, a shelf – the miracle drug – adorns its container.
In 1989 the then director of the Baranya County Pharmacy Center, Imréné Arató Ágnes Kőhegyi, renovated the pharmacy; the restoration of the pharmacy furniture was carried out by pharmacist and restorer Gábor Répay. The museum values of the rooms remained after the renovation, and it continued to operate in its original function as a pharmacy for more than ten years.
Today it functions as a pharmacy museum operated by the Janus Pannonius Museum.
