Peri Kalesi
Peri Kalesi, known locally as Pəri Qala or the "Fortress of the Fairy," is a historic stone structure set in rugged mountain terrain in northwestern Azerbaijan, near the village of Yukhary Chardaqlar. Local tradition attributes its name either to supernatural fairies or to an Avar princess once said to have ruled the surrounding lands. Researchers have variously dated the structure to as early as the fourth or fifth century, when it is thought to have served as a Zoroastrian fire temple, while noting later building phases reaching into the twelfth century that suggest the site was reused and refortified across different periods. Its most distinctive surviving feature is a stone portal set dramatically against the bare mountain rock, where a sacred flame is believed to have once burned. The fortress lies within the protected territory of the Zaqatala State Nature Reserve, which also safeguards the surrounding forested slopes.
