The Petőfi Museum Collection and Exhibition Space, commonly known as: Petőfi Museum Aszód, the most important permanent exhibition venue (Szontágh lépcső 2.).

The building complex

The museum's main building houses the permanent exhibitions. Its rectangular, mixed masonry (sandstone, brick) ground‑floor part was built between 1769–1771 as a school, with a significant financial contribution from János Podmaniczky II. In 1872 the upper floor was added to the thick walls; the building then acquired the classicist character that has been preserved to this day. Its segmented entrance is decorated with a ragged eyebrow cornice. Until 1931 it was the Lutheran church high school, then the boys' dormitory of the high school. In 1948 it was nationalized and turned into needy housing. In 1958 the Aszód district museum was established here. In 1962 the Pest County Museums Directorate, which coordinates the county museums, was created; since then the Petőfi Museum has been one of the regional museums of this organization.

The museum's storerooms, offices, restoration workshop, library and conference room were placed behind the main building, in an unnamed building row erected shortly after the Compromise. This building part was renovated and expanded between 1992–1994.

The drawing room built in 1896 is now a gallery: temporary exhibitions are organized there.

Attractions in the park in front of the main building:

the bust of the young Sándor Petőfi, a work by sculptor Ferenc Kovács, double recipient of the Munkácsy Prize;

the garden well marked with the engraved year 1770, brought from the Prónay Castle to Aszód;

a tombstone for each of the three historic religious communities of the town (Catholic, Lutheran, Jewish).

The museum

The Petőfi Museum's collection area is the settlement of Galgamente 19. It professionally supervises the six village museums of the small region:

Dány, ethnographic house;

Vankóné Dudás Juli Memorial House (Galgamácsa);

Iklad, village museum;

Tura, village museum;

Verseg, village museum;

Zsámbok, village museum;

its activities.

The permanent exhibition titled “Galga mente” provides an overview of the collection.
