The Stepanakert Art Gallery was founded on 10 February 1982 as a center for fine and applied arts in the city then known as Stepanakert. Its activity was interrupted during the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict of the early 1990s and only resumed in 2001, initially occupying a hall inside the municipality building, before moving in 2013 into purpose-built premises whose opening exhibition featured works by contemporary local artists and by the sculptor Sargis Baghdasaryan. Over the following two decades the gallery built up a permanent collection of more than 300 paintings and over 50 sculptures and regularly hosted temporary exhibitions of painting, decorative and applied art, and photography, along with lectures, masterclasses, and concerts. During the displacement of the Armenian population from the region in September 2023, the bulk of the gallery's collection was moved out and relocated to safety rather than left in place.
