Roerich's Shambala Museum
The Roerich Shambala Museum is a museum located in the Bayanzürkh district of Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. It is dedicated to the memory of the famous Russian painter and philosopher Nicholas Roerich.
History
In the winter of 1926–1927 for several months Nicholas Roerich, with the Central Asian expedition and his family, stayed in a Russian-style wooden house in Ulaanbaatar. At that time Roerich presented to the Prime Minister of Mongolia, Balin's Cerendorj, a painting he had made titled “Shambala’s Golden Chariot King Rgedendagva” intended for the new Mongolia. Mongolian researcher, disciple of Nicholas Roerich’s son Yuri Roerich, and chief secretary of the International Association of the Roerich Society of Mongolia, academic Shagdaryn Bira, initiated the opening of a museum at this house.
The Roerich house museum was opened on June 6, 2009, on the occasion of the Dalai Lama’s birthday celebration. In the shrine of the Buddhist religion made of Soviet tank steel in front of the house are books written by Nicholas Roerich, his son Yuri Roerich, his wife Elena Roerich, as well as Ganjur and Danzur.
