Şehreküstü Mosque
Şehreküstü Mosque, a place of worship in the Şehreküstü district of Bursa.
In the same place, a multi-domed reinforced concrete structure built in 1984 stands in place of the 15th‑century mosque. It is located just behind the Osman Gazi statue in Fomara Square. Beside it is the Pars Bey Tomb.
The original mosque, commissioned by Bedreddin Mahmut Bey (Pars Bey) during the reign of Murad II, burned together with the adjacent tekke in a fire in 1801. The ruined mosque was completely demolished in 1980 and the present reinforced‑concrete mosque was built in its place in 1984. Only its minaret is original. The minaret has a cylindrical shaft, a single balcony, and a pointed conical roof. The lower floor of the mosque contains a conference hall and a fountain.
The original mosque was made of rubble stone, covered with a broken roof; it had a spacious prayer area supported by wooden columns. Adjacent to the mosque, which was part of the complex known as Pars Bey Tomb and Zaviyah, was the Şehreküstü Cemetery where many scholars, historians and poets were buried. In 1904, due to road construction, the complex together with the cemetery was completely removed, and a mufti’s office and housing were built in its place. The zaviyah, established as Ahmed Baba Tekke near the Government Building, had its tomb demolished in 1994 and rebuilt.
