Şerbetdar Hasan Bey Mosque or Şarabdar Hasan Bey Mosque is a historic mosque located in the district of Vize, Kırklareli province.

History

According to the inscription on the entrance gate, it was built in Hijri 847 (AD 1444) by Mir-i Ekber Hasan Bey. It is understood from the endowment that Hasan Bey endowed many buildings and lands in Hayrabolu and Vize, and this building was among them. According to another view, the building was originally constructed as a hammam and was converted into a mosque by Gelibolu Mir-i Ekber Hasan Bey in 1362.

In a photograph taken in 1906 by Richard McGillivray Dawkins, the minaret, the last prayer hall, the dome, and the fountain next to the entrance gate are seen standing, but these parts of the building were demolished at an unknown date. The building, which was used as a depot by the District Gendarmerie Command for a long time and fell into ruin, underwent extensive restoration by the General Directorate of Foundations in 2008 and is now open for worship.

Architecture

The square‑plan, single‑dome Hasan Bey Mosque was built of rubble stone, limestone, finely cut stone, brick and reclaimed material. Marble was used for the door and window surrounds and for the arch of the entrance gate.

The north, south and east façades of the building show the same features. Below the façades, each has a window opening in the upper part. The west façade differs from the other façades with the entrance gate and minaret. The minaret on the square‑plan minaret base was rebuilt during the 2008 restoration. Additionally, old photographs show that this façade had a roofed prayer hall with a tiled, broken‑shingle roof attached to the minaret. The entrance to the minaret is in the harim (women’s) section.

The interior of the mosque is plastered, and there are plant and inscribed stylus decorations on the low dome that sits on a hexagonal drum and on the dome itself.
