Şükrü Çavuş ve Şehitler Anıtı
This memorial stands at the pier square of Mudanya, the Sea of Marmara port town in Bursa province, and honors Şükrü Çavuş, a sergeant remembered as the man who fired the opening shot of local resistance against the occupying forces that moved into Mudanya during the Turkish War of Independence. He was killed in the clash that followed, becoming one of the district's earliest martyrs of that campaign. Each year on the anniversary of his death, district officials, war veterans, neighborhood heads, political party and civil society representatives, and residents gather at the monument for a commemorative ceremony, laying wreaths and giving speeches that recall his role in Mudanya's resistance. The memorial has become a fixed point of local civic memory, tying the town's identity to the opening moments of the fight against occupation in 1920.
