Sultan Ways baba mosque
The Sultan Uvays-Baba complex, in the Beruni district of Karakalpakstan, is one of the most venerated shrine sites in the lower Amu Darya valley. It commemorates Uwais al-Qarani, said to have been a devout early follower connected to the Prophet Muhammad from a village in Yemen, with devotion to him in this region having developed through his later spiritual followers rather than any journey of his own. In the 17th century a symbolic tomb and shrine were built here, and in the 19th century a local ruler remembered as Olloqulikhan added a large mosque together with ten separate cells used for Sufi retreat and prayer. The core structure is a rectangular building measuring about 21.5 by 53 meters, oriented north to south. Today the complex functions as an active pilgrimage destination, with its own mosque, a sacred pond, and the shops, eateries, and lodging that have grown up around it to serve a steady flow of visitors.
