Technology Industry Museum
The Technology Industry Museum, known in Hungarian as the Királyi Technológiai Iparmúzeum, opened on 24 June 1883 on Budapest's Nagykörút in the Józsefváros district, on ground that had previously been the Beleznay family's garden. It was inaugurated under the sponsorship of the Hungarian minister Ágoston Trefort and operated alongside a state school for the building trades, an institution later linked to today's Bánki Donát technical faculty. The museum displayed machinery, tools, and models illustrating contemporary industrial and craft techniques, serving both as a public exhibition space and as a teaching resource for trade students. Its specialized technical library outgrew the museum itself and was eventually absorbed into what became Hungary's National Technical Information Centre and Library. The museum building at József körút 6 did not survive the Second World War: it was destroyed in 1945, and nothing of the original structure remains on the site today, making it one of Budapest's many lost nineteenth-century cultural institutions.
