The Telephone Museum in Budapest is located at I. Országház utca 30 (Úri utca 49), a former telephone history exhibition site.

History and Exhibitions

The museum presented more than 130 years of Hungarian material artifacts related to telephones in a historic building.

From 1928 to 1985 the Vár Rotary 7A1 type automatic telephone exchange operated here. After its shutdown, uniquely the exchange was not dismantled, but a museum was set up around it. Opposite the entrance, Puskás Tivadar's manual switchboard telephone exchange welcomed visitors. In the room there were old telephones, the original cable arrangement of the 7A1, the telephone sets personally used by Ferenc József, IV. Károly, Horthy Miklós, as well as the equipment of János Kádár as chief secretary. In the next room was the mentioned telephone exchange, some of whose lines were operational and could be tried. Beside the windows the cabling and overhead lines were visible. In the third room, alongside the old public sets, there were push‑button phones and modern telephone exchange modules. Here was also the internet exhibition. In the last room temporary exhibitions could be viewed. In front of the museum, among other things, the pupinfazék, the invention of the Serbian‑American Mihajlo Pupin, born in the Austrian Empire, was displayed.

The museum closed in 2017.
