Vendel-hegyi No 1 Cave
Vendel-hegyi No 1 Cave is one of the caves located in the Pilis Mountains within the Danube–Ipoly National Park. Archaeological finds have been recovered from it.
Research history
In 2012, Richárd Kovács and Zoltán Szabó surveyed Vendel-hegyi No 1 Cave, and based on the survey Zoltán Szabó prepared the cave plan map. The plan map was drawn on a map sheet presenting both Vendel-hegyi No 1 Cave and Vendel-hegyi No 2 Cave.
In the 2019 Zsákfalvi Riporter, in an article written by Zoltán Nevelős, it is stated that Pilisborosjenő is in a fortunate position because among the many smaller and larger caves in the area, the most exciting one is the closest to Pilisborosjenő. The cave, located less than a kilometre away, can be reached from the playground at a relaxed pace in 11 minutes. However, one must know where to turn off the path, because the cave can be approached only via a single-track path across the bozóton on the far side of Vendel Hill. The entrance to the cave is on the side of the flat‑topped hill behind the calvary, facing Solymár, where diligent work has been ongoing for years. Anyone who has visited the site in recent years while walking a dog or with children may have marveled at how spectacular terraces are built from extracted debris and rocks on the steep hillside, and how the entrances to the underground cavities are expanded.
The exploration is directed by the cave discoverer, geologist István Szenthe. Zoltán Nevelős and István Szenthe inspected the site on a cool but sunny morning in the autumn of 2019 because they were interested in the purpose of the work carried out here and why it might be of interest to the residents of Pilisborosjenő. István Szenthe wrote his thesis on the karst phenomena of the Nagy-Kevély area. At that time, in 1969, based on certain traces he assumed that there was probably a cavity underground here. In 1969, at the location of the cave’s current entrance, between the rock wall and the black soil beneath it, there was only a small crack. This remained so for more than 40 years. Five colour photographs are attached to the text, showing the cave and its surroundings as well as the finds that emerged from the cave.
