The Veysel Efendi Mosque lends its name to one of Bayburt's historic neighborhoods, in the town's old center beneath its hilltop citadel in northeastern Turkey. 'Efendi' was an Ottoman honorific typically given to educated men, religious scholars, or minor officials, suggesting the mosque and quarter were named after a local teacher or cleric remembered simply as Veysel Efendi. The Veysel Efendi quarter appears among the nine named neighborhoods recorded in Bayburt's 1845 Ottoman temettuat population register, a household tax census that counted 261 households across the town center, indicating the mosque already served an established community in the early nineteenth century, and likely earlier. Today the mosque is recorded in Turkey's Kulturenvanteri cultural heritage inventory as a preserved structure. Along with its neighboring mosques of similar age, it forms part of the dense fabric of small Ottoman-era neighborhood mosques that once defined daily religious life in old Bayburt.
