Yağıbasan Medresesi (Tokat)
Yağıbasan Medrese or Çukur Medrese is a medrese built in Tokat during the Dânişmendliler Beylik period.
It is on the south side of the Takyeciler Mosque in Sulusokak. It was commissioned between 1148 and 1157 by the Danişmendli Sultan Nizamettin Yağıbasan. Together with the Niksar Yağıbadan Medrese, which is completely identical in structure and plan, it is one of the best known medreses in Anatolia. These two medreses are also the first centrally domed medreses built in the Islamic world.
Its courtyard is covered by a dome. The courtyard dome has a diameter of 14 metres and an opening of 10 metres in the centre. The building, made of rubble stone, was constructed without decoration and is equipped on both sides with eyvans and vaulted rooms.
History
The one built in Tokat was constructed in 1151-1152 and is located in the city centre. It is also known as Çukur Medrese. It was commissioned by Nizâmeddin Yağıbasan, the grandson of Danişment Ahmet Gazi, during the Dânişmendliler Beylik period. The medrese, which does not survive today in its original form, was repaired during the reign of Seljuk Sultan II. İzzeddin Keykâvus and was used as a migrant shelter in the Ottoman period.
