Alaca Mescit (Balıkesir)
Alaca Mescit is a modest Ottoman-period mosque in central Balıkesir whose exact date of construction and founder are unknown, since its original foundation inscription has not survived; architecturally it is treated as a plain, typical example of a classical Ottoman neighborhood mosque. Its significance rests less on its architecture than on a single event: on 18 May 1919, three days after Greek forces occupied İzmir, a religious gathering held inside the mosque turned into a political meeting of Balıkesir's townspeople and notables. Those present resolved to reject the occupation outright and formed what became known as the Rejection of Annexation Committee, and the subsequent Alaca Mescit meetings pushed the discussion toward organized armed resistance. This civilian mobilization helped lay the groundwork for the later Balıkesir Congresses and the broader Kuvay-i Milliye movement, making the mosque one of the symbolic starting points of organized resistance in western Anatolia. It was comprehensively repaired in 1911.
