Yıldırım Mosque, Balıkesir
Yıldırım Mosque is regarded as the oldest mosque in Balıkesir, built in the late fourteenth century under the patronage of the Ottoman sultan Bayezid I, known as Yıldırım, meaning "the Thunderbolt." Its construction is generally dated to 1388, placing it among the earliest Ottoman religious monuments in the region, from the period shortly after the Ottomans absorbed the former Karesi beylik territory that included Balıkesir. As an early Ottoman mosque, it reflects the plainer, single-unit building style typical of the period before later imperial mosques grew into larger multi-domed complexes. The mosque has required structural attention over the centuries, including work to stabilize and preserve its supporting columns, reflecting its age and continued use. It remains an active place of worship and a reference point for the city's Ottoman-era history, standing as physical evidence of Balıkesir's transition from a beylik capital to an Ottoman provincial center.
