The Atatürk House Museum occupies a building raised in 1902 inside Diyarbakır's historic İçkale citadel, within the Sur district, originally built to house the headquarters of the army's troop inspectorate. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk used the building as his base in 1917, during his time commanding the Ottoman Second Army Corps in the city. The structure fell out of official use in the following decades until it was restored in 1973 under the direction of the Seventh Corps Command and opened to visitors as a memorial museum. It was later renovated again as part of a wider conservation project covering Diyarbakır's İçkale citadel, carried out by Turkey's Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Today the museum preserves rooms associated with Atatürk's stay, forming one of a network of Atatürk house-museums spread across cities where he served or resided, and gives visitors a window into the Diyarbakır phase of his military career before the Turkish War of Independence.
