Bitlis Şerefiye Medresesi
Bitlis Şerefiye Medresesi forms part of the Şerefiye complex built in 1529 by Şeref Han, a local ruling bey associated with the Ottoman court of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent. The complex combined a mosque, a medrese, and a bathhouse, reflecting the Ottoman practice of building multi-purpose religious and charitable foundations, or külliyes, around a single patron's endowment. In its medrese, children and young students of the period received instruction in the Qur'an and in the sciences, making it one of Bitlis's principal centers of learning during the sixteenth century. The complex is known for the quality of its stone carving, a hallmark of Bitlis's distinctive local building tradition using the region's dark volcanic stone. It remains one of the city's most significant surviving examples of Ottoman-era architecture and education.
