History

The construction of the mosque commissioned by Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II was completed in 1897 or 1898 according to its inscription. In Ahmet Yorulmaz's 2005 work, the construction date is given as 1905. At the time it was built, it was the only mosque on the island.

By the decision of the High Council of Real Estate Old Works and Monuments dated 9 June 1978, the center of Cunda, which includes the mosque, was designated as a "dense historic site area." The mosque was also included in the 1/1000 and 1/500 scale Urban Site Protection Zoning Plan approved by the Bursa Council for the Protection of Cultural and Natural Heritage on 22 January 1994, decision number 3622.

Architecture

The land registry area of the mosque located on Mevlana Street in the Mithatpaşa Neighborhood of Cunda, which belongs to the district of Ayvalık in Balıkesir, is 1,527.20 m². It is a neoclassical style masonry building constructed from a locally sourced pinkish stone called "garlic stone." The rectangular-plan building has on its front façade a portico with four columns, each connected by pointed arches and topped by a triangular pediment. While a sloping roof covers the mosque, the ceiling over the single prayer hall is flat. There is also a minaret built of the same material attached to the mosque.
