Kaptan Hasan Paşa Mosque
Hasan Pasha Mosque or Captain Hasan Pasha Mosque, a brick mosque built in 1899 in the Ottoman style, located in the Hasanpaşa Neighborhood of Kadıköy district in Istanbul.
It was commissioned by Bozcaadalı Hasan Hüsnü Pasha, the Naval Minister of Sultan Abdul Hamid II, on the site of the previously burned Divittar Mosque, together with a primary school and a square fountain.
It is a structure with a square plan, an interior dome, and an exterior tiled roof situated among triangular-shaped streets. The wooden dome of the building is one of the last examples of wooden‑frame domes referred to in Ottoman sources as "çarpuşta dome." The mihrab, decorated with pen‑work ornaments, is located inside among marble columns. From the last prayer area, one reaches a women's gallery with wooden railings supported by two columns that projects outward, and from there a lower second gallery is accessed.
The acanthus‑leaf decorations below the balcony and the minaret, reminiscent of ancient Corinthian column capitals, hold an important place among late Ottoman minarets. The mosque’s minaret was renovated in 1961.
In 1993, a basement floor with an entrance from the last prayer area was added to accommodate more worshippers. Restoration work that began in 2023 uncovered the original pen‑work decorations in the last prayer area and the sanctuary sections.
