The Kmetty Museum is a museum in Szentendre that opened in 1981. As part of the Ferenczy Museum Center, it operates on the town’s main square in an 18th‑century building. After the death of the painter János Kmetty, who worked in Szentendre in the summer (1975), his widow donated a legacy of 275 items to the Ferenczy Museum, from which the Kmetty Museum was created.

Exhibitions

Here, in the museum dedicated to Kmetty’s work, the complete oeuvre is displayed, which the museum was able to acquire on permanent loan from other collections. With the collection, the artist’s creative periods can be reviewed. Characteristic cityscapes, still lifes, and self‑portraits can be seen in the permanent exhibition. One can follow his early plein‑air works, then his cubist period, and then works that can be classified within Hungarian activism, up to the blue‑toned compositions created in the 1960s.

In 2018 the museum building was modernised, and the permanent exhibition that had been closed underneath is again open to visitors.

In the courtyard of the Kmetty Museum one can see the Csontváry statue made by Jenő Kerényi in 1960.
