MűvészetMalom is a cultural institution in Szentendre located at 32 Bogdányi Street.

Primarily a contemporary and modern art gallery, but also a venue for lectures and interdisciplinary artistic productions.

History of MűvészetMalom

The 19th‑century sawmill building in Szentendre is one of Hungary’s most interesting and unique exhibition spaces. It was created on the initiative of the Szentendre Art Foundation, based on the idea of painters Dezső Korniss and Pál Deim, in cooperation with the Szentendre Architects’ Association, and was inaugurated in 1998, then opened to the public in June 1999. The founders’ aim was, besides presenting 20th‑century Szentendre art in periodic exhibitions, to establish a modern art centre.

Renewed within the framework of a European Union grant and expanded with new wings, MűvészetMalom continued to operate according to the founders’ vision, under the professional direction of the Ferenczy Museum of Szentendre, a county‑wide city museum, since early 2012. From January 2016 it became part of the Ferenczy Museum Centre, which operates small museums in Szentendre.

The four‑unit (north wing, central wing, south wing, enclosed courtyard) MűvészetMalom, its location within the city of Szentendre, the atmosphere of the building, its uniqueness and more than a decade‑long history make it suitable to become a defining centre of contemporary visual art not only nationally but also in Central Europe.

Mission of MűvészetMalom

MűvészetMalom, as an exhibition centre expanded as a result of a European Union grant, is an institution that is the third largest exhibition venue in the country, a part of Hungarian intellectual‑artistic public awareness, and an important component of the cultural‑touristic market.

The MűvészetMalom, as a representative exhibition venue, presents and makes public all the values that relate to the history, art‑historical significance and present of Szentendre art.

The art centre originally founded by 33 local visual artists is the central exhibition venue for contemporary creator‑artists living in the city of Szentendre, where they receive group and individual presentation opportunities regardless of genre affiliation, stylistic aspirations or age group.

The MűvészetMalom, located in the historic downtown centre of Szentendre, in the emerging new museum‑exhibition axis, continuously provides the local and visiting audience with valuable, substantial, diversely interesting, entertaining, varied leisure possibilities, providing space for exhibitions and interdisciplinary art events.

In the Central‑Eastern European context the MűvészetMalom builds connections with art centres that share artistic principles similar to those of Szentendre in the 20th century and today, especially emphasizing workshops of the Hungarian community beyond our borders and the nations living together with them.

At the international level the aim is to create a “Szentendre art brand”, to ensure the presence of Szentendre art in foreign exhibition venues, museums, galleries, and simultaneously to present universal 20th‑21st century artistic trends, aspirations and outstanding artists and artistic groups in Szentendre.
