Selimzade Mosque
Selimzade Mosque, located on Selimoğlu Street in the Selimzade district of Bursa, was commissioned at the very end of the 16th century by the scholar Müderris Mehmet Efendi, known by the epithet Selimzade. An inscription at its entrance gives the construction date as 1601. The mosque is built of a masonry combination of stone and brick and is topped with a hipped roof rather than a dome, while its single-balcony minaret ends in a flat conical cap, a simpler form than the grander domed mosques of the city. A historic plane tree still stands in its courtyard, and outbuildings once included lodging rooms, a chamber for washing the dead, and a fountain. In front of the mosque is the tomb of its founder, Selimzade Mehmet Efendi, who died in 1611, marking the mosque as both a place of worship and his memorial site.
