The spherical chamber series above the Sátorkőpusztai Cave is located in the Pilis Mountains of the Danube–Ipoly National Park, in one of the caves on Nagy-Strázsa Hill.

Description

It is situated in a stone quarry on the eastern side of Nagy-Strázsa Hill in Esztergom‑Kertváros, in the quarry that also contains the entrance to the Sátorkőpusztai Cave. Above the entrance of the Sátorkőpusztai Cave is a naturally formed, irregularly shaped, horizontal axis‑oriented entrance facing southeast.

The 18‑metre‑long cave formed in upper Triassic Dachstein limestone under phreatic conditions. It developed along a fissure and consists of interconnecting spherical chambers. Most of the well‑known forms and protrusions from the Sátorkőpusztai Cave can also be observed here, but in a very damaged state. It may be connected with the Sátorkőpusztai Cave, but there is currently no traversable connection between them. Cave‑walking equipment is not required to view the entrance‑accessible cave, which can be approached by rock climbing.

It also occurs in literature as the chamber series above the Sátorkőpusztai Cave (Kraus 1997).

Research history

The cave is not mentioned in the 1984 book *Caves of Hungary*, nor in the national cave list. It is also absent from the manuscript compiled in 1991 that listed the caves of the Pilis Mountains. On 29 May 1997 József Regős surveyed it, and based on the survey Sándor Kraus prepared a plan map on 1 June 1997, drawn at a scale of 1:50.

On May 29, 1997 Kraus Sándor drew a site plan showing the geographic locations of the caves of Kis-Strázsa-hegy, Középső-Strázsa-hegy and Nagy-Strázsa-hegy. The plan marks the geographic location of the cave. In Kraus Sándor's 1997 report it is readable that the cave series above Sátorkőpusztai Cave was already known before 1997. It is a significant, endangered cave, whose map was made in 1997. The 1997 site plan was included in the report.
