The Strázsa-hegyi Kanyargós Cave is one of the caves located on Nagy-Strázsa Hill in the Pilis Mountains within the Danube–Ipoly National Park.

Description

The cave is situated on the southern side of Nagy-Strázsa Hill (Strázsa Hill) in the Esztergom-Kertváros district. About 10 m east‑northeast of the Strázsa‑hegyi Cave, on the rock‑wall side leading to the saddle, is the oval entrance of the Strázsa-hegyi Kanyargós Cave. The 8 m long cave is a dissolved, nicely sectioned tube passage formed in Triassic limestone that winds along the same rock layer. The upper part of the cavity has become filled in from the surface, making further exploration unsuitable. Montmilch and borsokite can be observed in the cave. The cave, which can be visited without a permit, is easily traversable using basic caving equipment.

Research History

On 29 May 1997 József Regős surveyed the cave, and on 1 June 1997, based on the survey, Sándor Kraus prepared the cave plan map and two cross‑section maps. The three maps present the cave at a scale of 1:50. The plan map shows the location of the two cross‑sections within the cave. On 29 May 1997 Sándor Kraus drew a site plan depicting the geographic locations of the caves of Kis‑Strázsa Hill, Középső‑Strázsa Hill and Nagy‑Strázsa Hill. The plan shows the geographic location of the Strázsa-hegyi Kanyargós Cave marked with the name Kanyargós. In Kraus’s 1997 report it is stated that the previously unknown Strázsa-hegyi Kanyargós Cave received its map in 1997. The report includes the site plan drawn in 1997.
