Known historically as the Hoca Yakup Darülkurrası or Yer Kapı Muallimhanesi, this building in Bursa was constructed in 1492 by a scholar named Hoca Yakup as a dedicated school for the memorization and recitation of the Qur'an. It is considered significant because it was built as a freestanding darülkurra rather than as part of a larger mosque or külliye complex, making it one of the oldest surviving independent examples of this building type from the Ottoman period. The structure is arranged in two sections, intended for use in winter and in summer respectively, allowing teaching to continue through the seasons. Its adjoining graveyard holds the graves of notable figures, including a descendant of the Sufi saint Abdülkadir Geylani and members of the Cizyedarzade family, a locally prominent lineage. The building was restored in 1946, and since 1957 it has housed the Bursa Society of Friends of Historic Artifacts, continuing its role as a center of learning and cultural preservation.
