Yer Kapı is one of the historic gates in the defensive walls that encircle Bursa Castle, the fortified hilltop quarter at the heart of the old city. It stands near the Üftade Mosque and tomb, at the end of Kavaklı Street, one of two roads inside the castle that still trace a grid layout dating back to the Hellenistic period. The gate is one of several historic entrances to the citadel, alongside the Zindan, Kaplıca, and Fetih gates, and lies roughly 440 meters from the Fetih Kapısı, or Conquest Gate. A small neighborhood mosque known as the Yer Kapı or Kara Ali Mosque stands beside the gate, with an old house, the Muallim House, on its other side. The walls and gates of Bursa Castle, parts of which date back to the Bithynian kingdom and were repaired and expanded under Byzantine and Ottoman rule, have been the focus of municipal restoration projects aimed at preserving this layered fortification system.
