Yıldırım Bayezid Medresesi
The Yıldırım Bayezid Medresesi is a theological school built as part of the larger Yıldırım Bayezid complex that Sultan Bayezid I, nicknamed the Thunderbolt, commissioned on a hill northeast of central Bursa between about 1390 and 1395. The full complex originally combined a mosque and dervish lodge, two madrasas, a mausoleum, a Turkish bath, a caravanserai, a hospital, kitchens, and stables, making it one of the most comprehensive early Ottoman religious and charitable foundations in the city. Of these structures, only one madrasa, the mosque, the tomb, and the bathhouse survive today. The surviving medrese, arranged around a courtyard in the classic Ottoman teaching-college plan, once ranked among the largest madrasas in Bursa. More recent municipal restoration work removed a later multi-story building that had been constructed over part of the historic structure and uncovered original foundations beneath it. The complex is included in Bursa's UNESCO World Heritage listing for early Ottoman monuments.
